Instead of continuing deeper into the trough of disillusionment, I want to share some alternatives that promise faster, cheaper, and more satisfying outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-state-of-data-driven\">The State of Data-Driven<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The popularity of search terms like \u201cdata-driven\u201d are at an all-time high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-51-1024x333.png\" alt=\"graph showing search results for data-driven\" class=\"wp-image-105477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-51-1024x333.png 1024w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-51-300x98.png 300w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-51-768x250.png 768w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-51-600x195.png 600w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-51-230x75.png 230w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-51.png 1216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If your media consumption looks anything like mine, you\u2019ve probably read countless articles about all the ways in which tech leaders leverage data to make informed decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the advent of analytics platforms, tracking pixels, and attribution modeling, it seems like everyone is an analyst. Or at least they play one in meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Stanford\u2019s Ramesh Johari notes, \u201c100 years ago, data was expensive and slow and practitioners were trained statisticians. Today, data is cheap and real-time and everyone is a practitioner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the <a href=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/insights\/how-do-i-map-research-data-to-increase-revenue\/\">increased access to data<\/a>, leaders are antsy to put that data to work. We regularly speak with leaders who want to transform their company\u2019s relationship to their data: they run heat mapping tools on their site, have numerous analytics tools at their disposal, and their teams have dabbled in <a href=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/insights\/form-effective-ab-test-hypothesis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A\/B testing<\/a>. But many still struggle to make sense of the abundance of data and choose the right path forward. They struggle to move from data-informed to data-backed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-data-informed-vs-data-backed\">Data-Informed vs. Data-Backed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"317\" src=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image7-29.png\" alt=\"graph showing similarities and differences between data-informed and data-backed\" class=\"wp-image-105478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image7-29.png 512w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image7-29-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image7-29-121x75.png 121w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the language is similar, we make a crucial distinction between data-informed and data-backed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many organizations aspire to be data-backed, but they often fall short by primarily relying on generative research methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative methods are great for understanding what\u2019s happening on a website and forming hypotheses about what would work better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative research methods include things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heatmap analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surveys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Observational analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open card sorting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reviews theming<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social listening<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, evaluative research can be used to substantiate ideas with evidence. Evaluative research methods include things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A\/B testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First-click testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comparison testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tree testing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When we ask so-called \u201cdata-driven&#8221; companies what data they use, they typically list a number of generative research methods. Those with experience in the industry tend to estimate that only about 10-20% of changes to a website move the needle on its KPIs. That means up to 90% of the work your devs do could be wasted on initiatives that don\u2019t really matter (to your bosses or your users).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why so many practitioners who understand the value of A\/B testing will tell you to \u201ctest everything.\u201d It\u2019s one of the only ways we know, with confidence, what changes are actually making a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While A\/B testing is incredible in its fullest application, the realities can be disillusioning. Organizations that utilize it often stumble upon obstacles that impede their success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-challenges-of-a-b-testing\">The Challenges of A\/B testing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These barriers include capabilities, time-to-value, velocity, and authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Capabilities <\/strong>\u2014&nbsp;We hear from teams all the time who have a skilled marketer leading optimization, but their ambitions can be cut short unless they have access to the many skilled disciplines needed to adequately test: data analysis, development, design, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time-to-value <\/strong>\u2014&nbsp;Depending on your traffic levels and goals, tests sometimes take longer to complete than teams have the appetite for<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Velocity <\/strong>\u2014&nbsp;Whether due to the complexity of your analysis or other barriers, even large teams struggle with velocity, getting only a few tests per quarter (or even per year) completed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Authority <\/strong>\u2014 We often hear from teams that struggle to find success because they never got full authority to test. When leaders of testing programs aren\u2019t given full authority to test on a website, it can lead to a lack of progress, resulting in halted initiatives, false starts, and wasted efforts when momentum is upset by organizational politics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, these challenges are not reserved for the small or just-starting-out brands. We are huge advocates for having it in your toolkit, and we consider it the gold standard for data-backed decision making. But the reality is that A\/B testing should be just one tool in your toolkit, and depending on your team\u2019s culture and capabilities, the \u201ctest everything\u201d approach may be just as much a hindrance to growth as testing nothing at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why we propose another path forward for data-backed decision making. We want to arm you with alternatives to A\/B testing that are faster, leaner, and ultimately, perhaps, more satisfying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The approach that is right for you will vary based on your resources, traffic levels, and company culture, but let\u2019s take a look at some alternatives to the \u201cA\/B test everything\u201d approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rapid-testing-efficient-evaluative-research-methods-for-data-backed-companies\">Rapid Testing: Efficient Evaluative Research Methods For Data-Backed Companies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rapid-prototyping\">Rapid Prototyping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What can you do instead? The practice of making small, iterative bets through rapid testing and <a href=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/insights\/what-is-prototyping\/\">prototyping<\/a> presents a pragmatic supplement to A\/B testing. I\u2019d go so far as to say it is a stand-out avenue for ushering in this new era of optimization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rapid prototyping, borrowed from the industrial design discipline, involves creating low-fidelity models to test and gain early feedback. This approach allows for quicker decision-making and validation through all kinds of user input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It embraces the philosophy of &#8220;test early, test often,&#8221; enabling organizations to pivot swiftly based on user insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can validate your prototypes with a variety of tests that can be grouped into two categories: task completion analysis and sentiment analysis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-task-completion-analysis\">Task Completion Analysis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Task completion analysis allows us to quickly test new ideas to understand time-on-task and success rates.
