{"id":106029,"date":"2024-02-16T13:18:46","date_gmt":"2024-02-16T21:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thegood.com\/?post_type=insights&#038;p=106029"},"modified":"2025-05-15T12:42:35","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T19:42:35","slug":"what-is-the-difference-between-data-informed-data-backed-and-data-driven","status":"publish","type":"insights","link":"https:\/\/thegood.com\/insights\/what-is-the-difference-between-data-informed-data-backed-and-data-driven\/","title":{"rendered":"What Is The Difference Between Data-informed, Data-backed, And Data-driven?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The popularity of search terms like \u201cdata-driven,\u201d \u201cdata-informed,\u201d and \u201cdata-backed\u201d are at an all-time high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your media consumption looks anything like mine, you\u2019ve probably read countless articles about all the ways in which tech leaders leverage data to make informed decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But unfortunately, as is the case with industry buzzwords, lots of organizations say they make &#8220;data-backed decisions&#8221; but simply don&#8217;t have the culture or toolkit to support them. Period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may run a UX research sprint or mine the data to understand their challenges, but if they fail to validate their ideas, they fall short of actually being data-backed. They are just data-informed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the advent of analytics platforms, tracking pixels, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/insights\/drive-and-convert-attribution-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attribution modeling<\/a>, it seems like everyone is an analyst. Or at least they play one in meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-data-evolution\">The Data Evolution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As Stanford\u2019s Ramesh Johari notes, \u201c100 years ago, data was expensive and slow and practitioners were trained statisticians. Today, data is cheap and real-time, and everyone is a practitioner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the increased access to data, leaders are antsy to put that data to work. We regularly speak with leaders who want to transform their company\u2019s relationship to their data: they run heat mapping tools on their site, have numerous analytics tools at their disposal, and their teams have dabbled in <a href=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/insights\/ab-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A\/B testing<\/a>. But many still struggle to make sense of the abundance of data and choose the right path forward. They struggle to move from data-informed to data-backed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And being data-backed isn&#8217;t about just having a <a href=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/insights\/ecommerce-google-analytics-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">good data story<\/a> to support your argument for why another treatment is better. You have to go beyond that and do the evaluative research to actually PROVE it to create a culture that is data-driven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"317\" src=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-57.png\" alt=\"graph showing difference between data-backed, data-informed and data-driven\" class=\"wp-image-106027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-57.png 512w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-57-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-57-121x75.png 121w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the language is similar, we make a crucial distinction between data-informed and data-backed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-generative-vs-evaluative-research\">Generative vs Evaluative Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many organizations aspire to be data-backed, but they often fall short by primarily relying on generative research methods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative methods are great for understanding what\u2019s happening on a website and forming hypotheses about what would work better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative research methods include things like:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heatmap analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surveys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Observational analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open card sorting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reviews theming<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social listening<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, evaluative research can be used to substantiate ideas with evidence. Evaluative research methods include things like:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A\/B testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First-click testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comparison testing&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tree testing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When we ask so-called \u201cdata-driven&#8221; companies what data they use, they typically list a number of generative research methods. Only about 25% of them list any evaluative research methods and rarely do they go beyond A\/B testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"447\" src=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-64-1024x447.png\" alt=\"generative research methods\" class=\"wp-image-106028\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-64-1024x447.png 1024w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-64-300x131.png 300w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-64-768x335.png 768w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-64-600x262.png 600w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-64-172x75.png 172w, https:\/\/thegood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-64.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative research, those methods on the left, are great for understanding what\u2019s happening on a website and forming hypotheses about what would work better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in order to move forward with <strong>confidence<\/strong> that your solutions will actually work, you need the methods on the right. Evaluative research is how we move from data-informed to data-backed and eventually develop a company culture that is data-driven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-continue-learning\">What to continue learning? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Here\u2019s a great example of a data-driven culture and efficiency-first mindset in action: <a href=\"https:\/\/thegood.com\/insights\/andy-lightman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How Andy Lightman\u2019s Ecommerce Philosophy Created Millions in Revenue<\/a>. <em>\u201cWe could end up using half our development budget on building something that doesn\u2019t perform&#8230;
